General
Specialists in wines from southern France's Languedoc-Roussillon region and passionate about the diversity of its grape varieties, we have developed the "Les Jamelles Cépage Rare" collection. Its aim? To allow wine lovers to discover a selection of grape varieties, whether old, forgotten or quite simply unexpected in the south of France. A veritable quest was required to hunt out the few plots where the vines flourish and whose yields are in line with our approach to quality. We also had to determine the vinification style best adapted to each grape variety in minute detail.
Origin
With its Spanish, and more precisely Catalan, roots, the Mourvèdre grape migrated to the French coasts in the Middle Ages where the climate was similar. It is a very southern varietal that is exclusively grown along the Mediterranean coast, from Perpignan to Fréjus. It requires sun, heat and proximity to the sea to thrive to its fullest potential.
Terroir
The grapes that go into the crafting of this Mourvèdre rosé come from two terroirs:
- the Minervois region with clayey soil lends the wine a certain freshness and rounded stones allow the grapes to reach full maturity
- the Biterrois region, which is slightly higher in altitude. This cooler terroir lends acidity and fresher aromas (peppermint, pepper) to the wine.
Character
A rather robust grape variety, Mourvèdre is above all a demanding grape that requires scrupulous viticultural care. When it is vinified for red wines, it results in high-quality tannic, structured wines boasting deep colour and big aromas and flavours, very well suited to cellaring. The rosés are structured and complex.
Vinification
Quick pressing ensures that colour extraction is kept to a minimum.
The juices are cold settled for 48 hours to set the colour and the tannins. Fermentation lasts 1 month, after which the wine is aged in stainless steel for 3 months sealed off from exposure to air.
Food-wine pairing
Serve between 8 and 10°C as an aperitif with tapas (salt cod, vegetable or prawn fritters, octopus salad), or with a vegetable gratin or terrine, Provençal-style cod, or barbecued fish or steak.
Tasting notes
Gorgeous light peach in colour. A fresh, expressive, intense nose with scents of peach, citrus fruits, herbs and spices (pepper, juniper, thyme, peppermint) along with floral aromas. Full bodied on the palate boasting nice tautness and minerality (flint). The finish is round, floral (rose), spicy (ginger, peppermint) with pleasing length. A rosé with lovely complexity!
